“Robert Mirabal, Taos, New Mexico” was made as part of a 10 year project for the organization Men Engaged in Nonviolence, promoting and providing counseling and mentorships for youth at risk in northern New Mexico. The photograph is also included in the award winning book, "One Of A Kind", published by Hatje Cantz, which is a series of portraits made in Europe, Asia, Africa, Jamaica, and the United States, that examines the diversity and complexity of the human experience through portraiture. The series began with a portrait of my mother, who had multiple sclerosis. Each succeeding photograph referenced it by focusing on finding beauty in character, uniqueness and the imperfections in the human spirit that make it whole, while honoring my conviction that there is a truth at the heart of humanity that can be captured with a camera.
