Silent Witnesses: Layers of Memory in Fukushima (2011–2026)
is a long-term photographic project examining how memory accumulates within landscapes over time.
Since the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster of March 11, 2011, Fukushima has been framed through narratives of catastrophe and recovery. Yet beyond these headlines, something quieter persists. Buildings remain. Empty grounds gather weeds. Seawalls rise. Solar fields spread. Institutions adapt. What disappears is not always visible; what remains is often layered.
This series does not focus on the spectacle of destruction. Instead, it observes the gradual sedimentation of decisions, absences, and substitutions across fifteen years. Each image functions as a fragment of accumulated time—where personal memory, collective history, and structural transformation overlap.
Fukushima is not presented as a single event, but as an ongoing condition. Through these layered landscapes, the work asks how societies absorb disaster, normalize it, and continue—while traces of what was lost quietly endure.
