The Philippines faces frequent flooding and increasingly extreme weather events due to its geographic location along the typhoon belt and the worsening impacts of climate change. Stronger storms, heavier rainfall, and rising sea levels have made floods more destructive, especially in low-lying urban and coastal communities. However, these natural risks are significantly worsened by systemic issues.
Corruption has played a major role in intensifying the situation, as funds intended for flood control, drainage systems, and disaster preparedness are often mismanaged or diverted. Poor urban planning, bad construction, and inadequate infrastructure projects—sometimes approved through corrupt practices—leave communities more vulnerable.
As a result, what could have been manageable natural hazards turn into recurring humanitarian and economic crises, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable populations.
These photos document the impacts of extreme weather events, frequent flooding and typhoons on the people in the Philippines, and showcase the stories of resilience told by the population facing hardships.
