"Stranded" is a tree that fell into the River Avon, Bristol, UK, and was taken on a high tide to where it came to rest at Netham Weir in the city, about a mile further up stream.
The weir is in a "V" shape and the tree became wedged there unable to go on any further and when there is a high tide the weir becomes submerged but the tree is unable to move and appears to be floating.
In this fixed position it allowed the opportunity to photograph it as a long exposure and for it to remain sharp in focus.
Hooper had a clear vision of what he wanted to achieve when he first came across the it and set about researching tide times, the best time of day and the ideal place to photograph it from, to achieve that vision.
Photographed in colour but always with the end goal of converting it to black and white Hooper combined his passion for art, as well as photography and produced it in his signature style of mimicking the look of silhouettes in a highly contrasted and atmospheric fashion.
