Thor's Well, a tidal pool on the Oregon Coast, is an intriguing phenomenon. It's a lava tube that captures the ocean waves at high tide and drops them into the depths and out to the Pacific again. Like all tidal pools, Thor's Well can be challenging to shoot. It only does its thing when the waves are high and inattentive photogs have gotten knocked around. Another challenge is to visit the spot at high tide -- and during sunset. That process took 3 days.
Creatively I chose a wide angle lens and stood as close as safely possible to the "well" so the viewer can peer within. I also chose a slower shutter speed to enhance the rush of water into the blackness. All these choices helped the image evoke the raw power of this strange phenomenon.
