Rising from deeply polluted ocean waters in a dystopian future, this water nymph creature pleads with humanity to live in harmony with nature and each other before it is too late. In a genetic mutation of radical physical aberration, her body has dramatically morphed. As a harbinger of the impending fate of the human species, her once-perfect physique now grows unsightly scales and barbed, spiky protrusions extending from her head, down her spine, and across her legs—appendages with a molecular structure of discarded plastic waste materials. Such is the unavoidable destiny of the human species if respect for the environment does not prevail. Yet, this water nymph’s resilience lends hope for some semblance of a future existence for humankind albeit with unavoidable abnormalities and distortions. Surely it is not too late for humanity to save itself from irreversible destruction. This project was executed in the ocean waters of the Philippines and was conceived by the photographer in collaboration with a renowned Southeast Asian conceptual artist/costume designer/body painter.
