At the beginning of the 19th century, all but 100 of the ibexes in the Alps were extinct. In 1820, these last animals were placed under protection, and by the end of the 19th century the population had grown again to 3,000 animals. Thanks to successful reintroduction programs, the ibex is now widespread again in large parts of its original habitat. Today, around 45,000 animals live in the entire Alpine region. All ibexes living in the Alps are descended from these 100 animals
