The Alster indoor swimming pool is a public indoor pool in the Hohenfelde district of Hamburg, just a few minutes' walk from the Ausser Alster lake. The Alster swimming pool was opened on 20 January 1973. Due to its spacious and sweeping roofed hall, the building has been popularly known as the "Swimming Opera" since the beginning. The Alster indoor swimming pool is Hamburg's largest public swimming pool and is run by Bäderland Hamburg GmbH. Numerous national and international swimming competitions have already taken place in the hall's 50-metre pool. The hall is due to reopen at the end of November 2023 after three years of renovation. As an architecture photographer I was particularly fascinated by the futuristic design of the building.
