This project was initiated by Dorset musician Nick Capaldi, a long-standing client. He’d recently recorded a new album, You and All the Seasons, which was a touching tribute to his wife Grace.
He knew that I had a talent for transforming abstract concepts into pieces of art and he wanted something unique. He’d sketched what he had in mind and wanted me to turn it from fantasy into reality.
This was no ordinary sketch. Nick’s idea was simple yet moving – a representation of him and Grace standing before a tree, with the tree representing all the seasons in one image. The tree symbolises the changing seasons, both real and those of their life together.
After hearing the music on the album, reading the lyrics, and talking to Nick about the kind of imagery he liked, I suggested that the feel for this should be quite ‘painterly’ and slightly taken away from reality.
I felt there was a very real danger of this looking over-photoshopped and cheap which we wanted to steer away from.
We looked through some images from my portfolio together and were drawn to ‘The Girl with The Red Hair’ as a starting point for the feel of the image. This image is based on Pre-Raphaelite paintings and is soft and low saturation.
I felt that the album cover image would need additional retouching of the seasonal elements on the tree, to ensure they would blend in. For this element, I called on Tobias Winkler, a talented retoucher I’ve known for many years. Toby did an amazing job.
