Taiwan has a rich history of utilizing bamboo, spanning one to two centuries. Bamboo holds significant importance in Taiwanese traditional craftsmanship. It serves as a versatile building material for constructing houses and can also be skillfully woven into various bamboo utensils. In Taiwan’s historical and cultural context, bamboo plays a vital role.
However, in recent years, Taiwan’s bamboo industry has faced challenges due to factors such as the proliferation of plastic products, cheap labor from Southeast Asia, and the mass export of bamboo crafts. Despite these obstacles, a handful of young artisans and artists continue to preserve this traditional craft. They are not only safeguarding the legacy of bamboo craftsmanship but also exploring innovative artistic expressions. Their journey is far from straightforward, but their dedication is inspiring.
The photo captures a young bamboo artist in action, diligently cutting bamboo from the groves. Despite their modest height of just 1.5 meters, their small frame exudes immense strength. As torchbearers of traditional craftsmanship, they fearlessly embrace the challenges, leaving a lasting impact on those who witness their dedication.
