Peking Opera has always fascinated me. As a child, I was drawn to its expressive performances, precise and elegant movements, and the beautiful costumes that tell traditional stories. The Chinese saying "One minute on stage, ten years of practice offstage" perfectly describes the dedication required from performers. Because the essence of Peking Opera lies in years of practice, the art form has suffered severe disruption due to a history of suppression and banning, leading to a loss in its transmission. Contemporary young performers are unable to inherit the refined skills and classic content of the tradition. However, in recent years, I am pleased to see a renewed interest in this traditional art form, and I hope it can transform and overcome its struggles.
This documentary photography project explores the world of Peking Opera, capturing both the captivating moments on stage and the quiet, intimate scenes backstage. Through vivid depictions of the performers' skilled performances, close-up details of traditional props, and portraits of individuals dressed in intricate costumes, I aim to rediscover how the narratives, visuals, and spirituality embedded in this revived tradition continue to shape Chinese collective consciousness and cultural identity.
