I love the night sky. I feel a connection with everyone who has ever looked into the heavens and doubtlessly wondered many of the same things that I do. How far does the universe extend? Are we alone in this ocean of galaxies? What wondrous things lie above that we cannot begin to image? For me, spending time in the remote wilderness of Montana during the night puts life in perspective. Listening to coyotes welcome the dark and owls later lament the coming of day allows me to fully relax and appreciate deeply beautiful moments.
For this photo, I hiked several miles into Montana's Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness, spending two nights on the shores of Pine Creek Lake. I was treated to a spectacular show of air glow - green along the horizon - a striking clear sky, and a pair of chilly, clam nights. While taking this image I hoped that we never unravel all the mysterious of the universe. That we never find all the answers. That perhaps a little magic will remain.
