Capoeira is a form of cultural and sports expression that combines martial arts, dance and music. It originated in southern Angola, when shepherds celebrated the initiation of young people into adulthood with a ceremony called n'golo (zebra in the Quimbundo dialect). It was later developed by the descendants of African slaves who arrived in Brazil at the end of the 16th century. It is characterized by agile and complex movements and acrobatics on the ground and in the air. Unlike other martial arts, capoeira is always practiced to music, with the practitioners taking turns fighting and singing and playing the typical instruments.
