I spent an afternoon in Utah’s west desert with a small group of wild horses, simply watching and waiting. My goal was to capture something different, an image that felt alive, not posed or expected. After a few hours, one young mustang stepped away from the herd and rolled on the dry desert floor. When he stood, he shook off a cloud of dust. It was quick, messy, and beautiful, and I had just enough time to catch it.
Moments like this don’t happen on cue. They take patience, timing, and a willingness to let the animals lead. This photo is one of my favorites because it shows the horse as he is, free, expressive, and part of the land.
