Women In Tech: It Really IS an Impenetrable Glass Ceiling
Words & photos by Jady Bates (Insta: @jadybates // www.jadybates.com)
Imagine yourself a woman in tech, you are starting the climb. Maybe it is the beginning of your career, maybe it is the beginning of your career in technology.
You have a job with a lot of promise and you get your first big promotion. Here you go. You are on your way.
With all the enthusiasm of “newness” you are determined and excited. You are going to “break that ceiling!” Nothing is going to stop you. Not only are you talented, organized and a natural leader, you are easy to work with and people like you. You have never NOT gotten a stellar job review.
Then you encounter some strange things. You feel you are not getting promoted in the same manner as men getting promoted past you. Is this real? Is this true? It is crazy-making. You wonder if it could be because you are a woman.
In fact, as you continue on this career path, you feel almost as though you are getting pick-pocketed along the way. HEY! It feels almost like an invisible, impenetrable system that locks you out. You get stellar reviews. You are doing everything right. But still, you are training men to get promoted beyond you. Men around you are reaching new heights.
Now you know you are definitely climbing a ladder with NO rungs. YES, it
is because you're a woman.
