An extremely unusual cannibalistic attack by a 5.0 mtr long Nile crocodile on a smaller 2.5 mtr long Nile crocodile.
During the drought conditions of 2019 in the Okavango Delta (Botswana) many waterholes had dried out, and finding one with water was fortunate. We settled down to observe the unusually large number of 64 Nile crocodiles which had congregated around this waterhole, as there appeared to be movement in the water caused by an equally large number of catfish.... We anticipated that it wouldn't be long until we would witness some crocodile action!
Gradually the largest crocodile started swimming quite slowly around the waterhole and as he approached a few smaller crocs floating on the surface, we were stunned to watch him open his jaws and slowly clamp down on the head of one of the smaller crocs! In my many years in the bush, I had heard about croc cannibalism, but only the very little juveniles, and never anything like the size which we saw in front of us. *The other rangers also agreed that it was a first for them also.
The sheer violence, of the primordial brutality that ensued, once the smaller croc realised that it had been bitten, had us spell-bound!
