As we approached the cave, our excitement built on what we would find inside. Would it be just a bit of “ice lip,” or would there be some depth to the cave? What would the cave have inside it – just an open cave, or would some fascinating features give it character? As we jumped into the cave, we quickly answered our questions; it was the cave of all caves. Massive in every respect, depth, height, width, and in feature. I particularly became fascinated with the cornice hanging over the front entrance.

After exploring the cave, I returned to the front of the cave to capture the cornice. I started focusing my shots solely on the cornice, but then the snow mound in the bottom right started to fascinate me. It reminded me of a whale. So, I decided to experiment and include it in the shot. The middle is sky turned white to give the photo a bit of the what the heck is going on here feel to it. From here, The Whale was born.
