“Angel Unleashed” documents a key stage in Blue Angels operations: the moment a Navy Blue Angel Super Hornet begins its pre-flight sequence while the crew chief performs the required smoke check. This is the point where the aircraft transitions from a parked jet to an active, mission-ready machine. The smoke check—brief, routine, and essential—confirms proper ignition, airflow, and engine function before the pilot proceeds with final checks and taxi.



In capturing this scene, I wanted to show the teamwork and precision that support every Blue Angels demonstration. The public often sees the aerial performances, but not the careful ground procedures that make them possible. The crew chief’s position beside the aircraft reflects both safety protocol and extensive training. Their attention to detail ensures that even minor irregularities are identified early, and their communication with the pilot sets the tone for the rest of the flight. This photograph emphasizes that the Blue Angels’ success relies on disciplined coordination long before the jet leaves the runway.



From a photographic standpoint, I focused on timing and clarity. The moment the exhaust begins to plume is brief, and isolating that transition required observing several engine starts and anticipating the exact sequence. The angle highlights the aircraft’s lines, the crew chief’s posture, and the visual cues that indicate the engine is coming online. I chose a composition that keeps both subjects—the Super Hornet and the crew chief—equally important, underscoring that high-performance aviation depends on both machine and personnel.
