We were in the Khwai area of the extreme north eastern tip of the Okavango Delta, in Botswana, and saw a large pall of smoke not far off, so we made haste to get there, knowing that fire attracts birds, all seeking a free meal of hapless insects, rodents, small reptiles, and even small mammals which had been trapped by the flames!

On our arrival we found a large area had already been burned, leaving a matt of charcoal coloured, fresh ash, and of course lots of birds swooping down to collect partially burnt insects!

There were Carmine bee-eaters, Lilac-breasted rollers and other birds all milling around, but what caught my eye were the bright blue flashes that we skimming the surface of the freshly burnt, charcoal-coloured floor area, scooping up unlucky insects, and this Lilac-breasted Roller seemed to turn towards me, as if to ask if I had captured his magnificence...
