2023 marked the first rains in Northern Kenya after 8 years of devastating drought, harsh enough to displace people and kill livestock, even camels. With life and vegetation dying, the tribes of northern Kenya were forced to abandon their traditional nomadic lifestyles and relocate in semi-permanent settlements close to towns and villages to secure access to water and, in many cases, temporary employment. As the years went by, an entire generation of children were born and grew up without ever knowing the nomadic life, with access to phones, electricity, schools, contact with varied people of the same age groups and more. With the return of the rains, the tribal elders are effectively forcing a return to the nomadic lifestyle, something that is bringing the two generations in sharp conflict, a conflict which will have profound effects on their futures.
